Winning Pumpkin

At the Spokane County Interstate Fair competition for the largest vegetable/fruit/tallest sunflower etc., grown attracts considerable attention. This 658-pound (298.4 kilograms) giant took the top prize for the largest pumpkin! A sign informed us that a pumpkin is a fruit.

The owner's two really big ones were taken to a weigh-off earlier this fall in Oregon sponsored by the Pacific Giant Vegetable Growers Association. There, his pumpkin weighed in at 961 pounds (435.9 kilograms) and his green squash at 961.5 pounds (436.1 kilograms)– enough to win him $1,000 in prize money, but less than his personal best of 1,073 pounds (486.4 kilograms).
