![]() On November 30, 1995, the Port Gamble sawmill, the oldest continuously operating sawmill in the U.S., closed permanently. The mill sawed its first log in September 1853. In 1966, the town of Port Gamble was designated a National Historic Landmark District. When I took this picture I was struck by the sharp contrast of the manicured lawns and park-like beauty of Port Gamble to the sad remains of the old saw mill fading into the haze of the day. I paused... and wondered why the mill itself had not been declared a national historic place.
